On April 26, 2025, a devastating event unfolded in Vancouver during the Lapu Lapu Day festival, a celebration of Filipino heritage. A black Audi SUV drove into a crowd, resulting in 11 fatalities and numerous injuries. The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Kai-Ji Adam Lo, was apprehended at the scene by bystanders and later arrested by police. Authorities have charged him with eight counts of second-degree murder, with additional charges anticipated.

The victims ranged in age from 5 to 65, and the incident has deeply affected the Filipino community in Vancouver, which comprises nearly 6% of the city’s population. The festival, attracting over 100,000 attendees annually, was nearing its conclusion when the tragedy occurred.  Authorities have stated that the act is not being treated as terrorism. The suspect has a history of interactions with police and mental health professionals.

In response to the tragedy, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney canceled campaign events and attended a vigil with provincial and community leaders. Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. also extended sympathies and pledged cooperation with Canadian authorities.  A 24-hour support center has been established for victims and their families.

This incident has sparked discussions about mental health care and public safety in Canada. Vancouver’s interim police chief and mayor emphasized the need for better mental health care rather than increased policing to prevent such incidents.

The community continues to mourn the loss and seeks solace in unity and support. Memorials and tributes have begun as investigations and support efforts continue.
