Plot Overview
The International Space Station has been converted into a secret prison housing the world's most dangerous terrorists. When these inmates seize control and aim the station toward Moscow as a makeshift missile, it's up to a shuttle pilot and a rookie doctor to thwart their plans. Complicating matters is CIA agent Reiser (Scott Adkins), whose own agenda threatens to derail the mission.
Performances
Scott Adkins, known for his dynamic action roles, delivers a performance that feels constrained by the film's limited scope. While his physical prowess is evident, the script offers little depth for his character. Supporting actors, including Aaron McCusker and Michelle Lehane, provide serviceable performances but are hindered by underdeveloped roles.
Direction and Technical Aspects
Director Eric Zaragoza's vision for a claustrophobic, high-tension thriller is undermined by budgetary constraints and a lackluster script. The film's special effects and set designs fail to convincingly portray a space-bound environment, often breaking immersion. Action sequences, a potential highlight given Adkins' involvement, are surprisingly sparse and lack the choreography fans might expect.
Themes
Incoming touches on themes of governmental secrecy, the ethics of covert operations, and the consequences of unchecked power. However, these themes are explored superficially, leaving little impact on the viewer.
Strengths
- Conceptual Premise: The idea of a space station prison overtaken by terrorists offers a fresh setting.
- Scott Adkins' Presence: Adkins brings credibility to the action sequences.
Weaknesses
- Underwhelming Action: Despite Adkins' capabilities, the film lacks memorable fight scenes.
- Weak Script: Dialogue and character development are minimal.
- Technical Shortcomings: Special effects and set designs break immersion.
Reception
Critics have largely panned Incoming for its squandered potential and lackluster execution. Rob Hunter of Film School Rejects lamented the misuse of Adkins' talents. Reviews from City on Fire and Voices From the Balcony also criticized the film's poor production values and uninspired storytelling.
Final Verdict
Incoming presents an intriguing concept that ultimately falls flat due to its uninspired execution and technical limitations. While Scott Adkins' involvement might attract action enthusiasts, the film fails to capitalize on his strengths, resulting in a forgettable addition to the sci-fi action genre.
